How to Prepare for Cosmetic Surgery: A Complete Pre-Op Guide for Irish Patients

How to Prepare for Cosmetic Surgery- A Complete Pre-Op Guide for Irish Patients

Booking your cosmetic surgery is a big step. However, what happens in the weeks before your procedure matters just as much as the surgery itself.

Good preparation leads to a smoother procedure, a faster recovery, and better results. In contrast, poor preparation can increase the risk of complications and slow down healing.

At Eden Clinic in Dublin, we provide every patient with detailed pre-operative guidance at consultation. This guide covers the key steps that apply across all of our cosmetic surgery procedures.

Six Weeks Before Surgery

The further in advance you prepare, the better. Six weeks before your procedure is the ideal time to make key lifestyle adjustments.

Stop Smoking

Smoking significantly increases the risk of complications during and after surgery. It reduces blood flow to the skin and slows healing.

Most surgeons recommend stopping at least six weeks before your procedure. Furthermore, you should avoid smoking throughout your recovery period.

If you need support to stop smoking, speak to your GP. There are effective supports available across Ireland.

Review Your Medications and Supplements

Some medications and supplements increase bleeding risk. As a result, you may need to stop taking them before surgery.

Common examples include:

  • Aspirin and ibuprofen
  • Blood-thinning medications such as warfarin or rivaroxaban
  • Fish oil, vitamin E, and omega-3 supplements
  • Herbal supplements including ginger, garlic, and ginkgo biloba

Do not stop any prescribed medication without speaking to your GP first. Your Eden Clinic doctor will advise you on what to pause and when.

Reach a Stable Weight

If you are considering weight loss before surgery, aim to reach a stable weight at least six weeks beforehand. Significant weight fluctuations after surgery can affect your results.

This is particularly important for procedures such as

tummy tuck and liposuction. Your surgeon will advise on your ideal weight range during consultation.

Two to Four Weeks Before Surgery

As your procedure approaches, there are several practical steps to work through.

Arrange Your Recovery Support

You will need a responsible adult at home with you for at least the first 24 to 48 hours after surgery. Arrange this in advance.

Consider who will help you with:

  • Transport to and from the clinic on surgery day
  • Meals and household tasks during the first few days
  • Collecting any medications from the pharmacy if needed
  • Looking after children or dependants during your recovery
Prepare Your Recovery Space

Set up a comfortable recovery area at home before your surgery date. You will not want to be doing this when you return from the clinic.

Useful things to have prepared include:

  • Extra pillows to elevate the head or treatment area
  • Loose, comfortable clothing that is easy to put on and take off
  • Ice packs for managing swelling in the first 48 hours
  • Entertainment for a few days of rest, such as books, podcasts, or films
  • Meals prepared and frozen in advance so cooking is not required
Avoid Alcohol

Alcohol thins the blood and can slow healing. Avoid alcohol for at least two weeks before surgery. Furthermore, you should avoid it throughout the early stages of recovery.

One Week Before Surgery

The week before surgery is the time to focus on final practicalities.

Follow Your Pre-Operative Diet Guidance

Your Eden Clinic team will provide specific dietary guidance. In general, focus on eating well in the week before surgery.

Good nutrition supports healing. In particular, foods rich in vitamin C, protein, and zinc are beneficial in the lead-up to surgery.

Avoid Anti-Inflammatory Medications

Stop taking ibuprofen, aspirin, and any other anti-inflammatory medications at least one week before surgery. These increase bleeding risk. Paracetamol is usually safe, but confirm this with your doctor.

Sort Out Your Skincare Routine

If your procedure involves the face, stop using retinol, vitamin C serums, chemical exfoliants, and any active skincare ingredients one week before surgery. These can increase skin sensitivity.

For procedures such as

facelift, blepharoplasty, or brow lift, your surgeon will provide specific skincare guidance at your pre-operative appointment.

The Night Before Surgery

The evening before your procedure, keep things simple and calm.

  • Stop eating and drinking at the time specified by your doctor
  • Wash your hair, as you may not be able to wash it for several days after facial surgery
  • Remove nail polish and any acrylic nails if possible, as these can interfere with monitoring equipment
  • Lay out your surgery day outfit: loose, comfortable clothes that do not go over your head
  • Get to bed at a reasonable time so you are well rested

Try to avoid reading too much about your procedure online the night before. Trust the process and the team you have chosen.

On the Day of Surgery

Your pre-operative instructions will cover this in full. However, the key points are:

  • Do not eat or drink anything from the specified time onwards
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing with no jewellery or makeup
  • Arrive at the clinic at the time given to you by the team
  • Bring your ID and any medications your doctor has approved

Questions to Ask Your Surgeon Before Surgery

Your pre-operative consultation is the right time to raise any concerns. Useful questions to ask include:

  • Are there any specific pre-operative instructions for my procedure?
  • What medications should I stop, and when should I stop them?
  • What should I do if I develop a cold or illness before my surgery date?
  • What are the signs of a complication I should watch for after surgery?
  • Who do I contact if I have concerns during my recovery?

No question is too small. Your clinical team at Eden Clinic expects and welcomes these conversations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I wear makeup on surgery day?

No. You should arrive without makeup, moisturiser, or any skincare products on the treatment area. These can interfere with the sterile environment required for surgery.

Contact Eden Clinic as soon as possible. In some cases, surgery will need to be rescheduled. Do not wait until surgery day to raise this.

Follow your pre-operative instructions exactly. In general, nothing should be consumed after the specified fasting time. If you are unsure, call the clinic before your appointment.

Most supplements that increase bleeding risk should be stopped at least two weeks before surgery. However, your Eden Clinic doctor will give you specific guidance based on what you are taking.

Good preparation is the most effective thing you can do. Stopping smoking, eating well, reaching a stable weight, and following your pre-operative instructions all contribute to a faster and smoother recovery.
